Welcome to Sanford

Sanford is a historic city located beside beautiful Lake Monroe and the St. Johns River. This ideal location gives Sanford an idyllic landscape with waterfront access, a walkable downtown, and a lively event scene with retail and dining options. Mild weather compliments the area's ambiance and allows residents to join outdoor activities year-round.

Henry Shelton Sandford founded Sanford in 1870 and planned to make the area “The Gate City of South Florida.” Later, Sanford became a lucrative town with a train station, hotel, and harbors. Sanford was also nicknamed “Celery City” for being one of the largest vegetable shipping centers in the United States.

As one of the oldest incorporated cities in Florida, Sanford has many architectural styles ranging from Folk Victorian and Colonial Revival to Craftsman and Prairie-type buildings. One of the main draws of Sanford is its Historic District downtown area lined with brick streets, upscale restaurants, and boutique stores. In addition, the town is adorned with beautiful landscaping and years-old oak trees.

The city has an international airport which makes it easily accessible. Sanford is also within driving distance of Orlando attractions and the eastern seaboard beaches. These features make the city an ideal home for individuals who enjoy spending the day shopping or sharing a bite to eat with friends and family.
